There are so many different view points and opinions in the world about personal development and how to achieve success that it can sometimes be confusing.

Content can be convincing. People talk from experience and share how things have worked for them. Others have done their research and have strong beliefs about what they see to be true. How do we know which information to take on board?

I heard something a long time ago and have always reminded myself of it.

I was attending an event and before it started the lady who was running it, Jan Ruhe stood up and said ‘You will receive a lot of information this weekend. Take the best and leave the rest’

Take what resonates with you at the time and inspires you to take action.

This can apply to any form of learning, for example when you are reading from a book, watching a YouTube video, attending a seminar/workshop or listening to a podcast.

You don’t have to take all the information on board. You just have to follow your heart and go with what feels right.

From practice and experience you will find your happy place and you will discover your favourite mentors and you can learn from them through their various sources of content.

I thought I would share some examples of how I have formed my own opinions and beliefs about some of the more traditional statements  that you may come across on your personal growth journey. Of course, you may or may not feel the same way. These are just my thoughts….

The only way to achieve Success is through hard work

Yes, you can achieve success through hard work but I don’t believe it’s the only way. When you are excited and passionate about something, I believe that the action you take is inspired action and sometimes won’t feel like you are working at all.

Shyness must be overcome

I don’t believe we should try to overcome shyness. I feel like when you try to  overcome something it seems like you are fighting against it. I prefer to embrace shyness and work with it. Accept that you are shy and love yourself for it. Click here to read another post, The Power of Belief – Yes you can be shy and successful

You must niche down in order to succeed in business

I used to think this was true, but now I believe that you when you create what you want to create regardless of what you think you should create and when you talk about what you want to talk about, you will attract the people who are aligned with you and who are meant to find you. There is nothing like the feeling of being free to express yourself and who you are and talk about the things that light you up.

Your goals must be smart goals

When I first learned about setting goals I came across SMART goals, goals that should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. This feels so restricting to me. I came up with my own acronym for goals…..FEELINGS

Your goals should give you a Fire in your belly, they should trigger Emotion, get you Excited, you should Love them, they should Inspire you, you will stay true to them No matter what, they give you Goosebumps, and they make you Smile!

How to set goals, goal setting, achieve, inspired, love, smile

Feeling your way to your goals

You can’t be successful doing more than one thing at a time

I was listening to a podcast yesterday, one of my favourites, The Diary Of A CEO by Steven Bartlett. He was interviewing the founder of the very successful beauty brand Deciem and The Ordinary. Nicola Kilner said that their company had an image on the wall and had done since the company began that said FOCUS IS OVERATED. Watch the episode here

Whilst I can understand that we must sometimes give things our absolute focus, I also think that having lots of things to spend time on adds variety to life, it gives us well needed rest from each of our projects and is simply exciting! I love my three businesses with a passion but if I only had one of them I often wonder if I would love it as much? I never get bored, every day is different and I’m having fun and that to me is all that matters.

I hope this post has left you feeling slightly less confused and that you will move forward and discover and learn from what inspires you and feels right to you!

If you need any help whatsoever, I am here for you.
